Cyber Monday Promotion!! Free ACEO bug print...

It took mere nanoseconds of being online this morning to realize that today, everyone with an online shop is having special promotions! It IS "Cyber-Monday" after all- apparently the biggest online shopping day of the year!
In honor of Cyber Monday, I decided I'd start my December promotion today. A little early. Cause that's the way, uh huh, uh huh, I like it.

Starting today, and for the month of December, you will receive a FREE print (of your choice) of one of my "30 Bugs in 30 Days" ACEOs with ANY order from my online gallery shop!! :)

Here's how to get your free insect ACEO print:
  1. Go to my online gallery shop and place some goodies into your cart...
  2. In a new tab or window in your browser, go to my flickr "30 Bugs in 30 Days" set of pictures (links are also available in my shop) and decide which of the 30 bugs is your favorite!
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/samanthasartstudio/sets/72157618274937415/
  3. When you go to PayPal to check out, write the name and/or number of your favorite ACEO bug choice in the "Notes to Merchant" section. (If you can't find the "Notes to Merchant" link, you can also email me the details of the bug you'd like to add to your order.) If you'd like a specific color for the border of your image, please specify this as well!
The size of the print you will receive is 5" x 7", an easy-to-find standard frame size. The insect ACEO printed graphic will be the standard ACEO size of 2.5" x 3.5". It will have a colored border around it (color will be chosen from something in the image, unless you specify a color you'd prefer), which will make for easy framing and you won't need a mat! You can also cut down the image to 4"x6" or smaller if you like.

Here is an example:

Happy Shopping!**

(** note: I do realize that I'm making a promotion post immediately following a post about shopping/too much stuff/consumerism etc. However, I happily and enthusiastically promote shopping handmade and/or eco-friendly.) :)

Last Featured Bug Shop: Honeybee Crochet!

Last (but NOT least!) in my list of featured Etsy Buggy shops this week is:

HoneyBee Crochet,
AKA SturmDM on Etsy!

Honeybee Crochet is a very special bug shop because, while her entire shop doesn't *just* consist of bugs (she has a wide variety of items and subject matter!), she does HELP bugs with her crochet! Specifically, she helps honeybees! She donates proceeds from some of her crochet work to honeybee research.

She has a whole section in her shop with one-of-a-kind freehand bees! They are designs she's made up herself without a pattern!

Happy Birthday to Weird Al!

Today is a very special day...
The birthday of Weird Al!!
(I wonder if he's sick of people calling him up and playing him his own Birthday anthem?)

Weird Al is one of my absolute favorite people in the world. I've loved him since I was a kid, and thought he was a total complete genius for making a career out of writing funny songs and hilarious song parodies. Changing the lyrics of songs has always been a favorite past time of mine, too.... if I had the equipment, I'd probably be releasing my own parodies to the world wide internets. Sometimes I think maybe I missed my true calling. Oh well!

Not only is Weird Al hysterical (and laughter is the best medicine!), but he's a great role model.
Here are some things we can all learn from the wonderful Weird Al Yankovic:

1. Don't take yourself too seriously!
....Check out the "White & Nerdy" video... bwahahhahaa!
2. Don't grow out of potty humor.
.....Listen carefully to the background noises in "Another One Rides the Bus"
3. Embrace silliness.
.....and when isn't a fat suit funny? Check out "FAT!"
4. Be yourself!
....you can "Dare To Be Stupid!!"
5. Adapt, but also
6. find a way to do what you truly enjoy.
....In other words, make sure you do "Whatever You Like"!
7. Try to maintain good relationships.
... which means sometimes you might have to apologize for something, even if everything was just a big misunderstanding.
8. Don't forget to LAUGH!

Happy Birthday, Al! It's your 50th, I hope you have a great one!

Featured Etsy Shop... SturmDM!

Since I'm part of the handmade community over at Etsy, every now and then I like to spotlight an extra special shop...

This time I've decided to feature "Honeybee Crochet", the shop of a dear friend of mine, Doris. Like me, Doris is a friend to the bees!... Which is how we became acquainted. Her shop is full of many functional handmade items such as afghans, pillows, kitchen items, shawls and other wearables.
But my favorite things in her shop are her bees!

Is this patriotic bee not one of the most cute and creative things you've ever seen!?

She crochets them all by hand from patterns that she has created herself, so all of the bees are one of a kind! She truly has a creative gift, to make all these wonderful and adorable bees!.. Here are some of my favorites:

Little Bees with Big Hearts!
(Great for Valentine's day, Christmas, Anniversary, or any other occasion for someone you love who loves bees!)

Doris donates some of her proceeds from sales in her Etsy shop to Honeybee Research. Check her Etsy Profile for more info.

You can find Doris on Etsy at:
http://www.SturmDM.etsy.com

And read about her life of bees, Gizzy, crochet, and Georgia here:
http://crochetingingeorgia.blogspot.com/
She's always got something interesting to blog about, and she's currently got a pet costume contest going on! But if you're going to enter, hurry, because there is only 1 week left for submissions! (Entry deadline to submit your pets' pictures is Oct. 21st!)

In addition to having a wonderful creative gift, Doris also has a big heart and is one of the nicest people ever. Please go visit her blog and her shop and show her a little love :)

They choo-choo-choose...... me!?

Last month when I was in Maryland for my grandmother's funeral, I had one bright spot of good news during the week I was away. I received a voicemail from the Greater Harrisburg Arts Council telling me that one of my images I had sent in for jurying into the Kipona ArtFest had been selected for use in some advertising for the Kipona Festival. Print ads were mentioned, as well as billboards. I did get excited.... but tried not to get my hopes up for anything too spectacular (and, besides, I was a bit preoccupied with family matters). I assumed my image would be very small, maybe amongst 5 or more others, perhaps in a collage, used on a couple of things? A great honor to be chosen, obviously, and I looked forward to seeing my image somewhere in print in the near future.

Imagine my shock when a few weeks later, my husband and I were returning home from a trip to Wyoming... and just as we drove into the city, he saw this:

When he saw it, he yelled something to the effect of "WHOA!!" and, since I was driving, at first I thought there was a hazard in the road.
Rolling tire? Pet? Small child? Caterpillar in the street?
"WHAT? What is it?! What's wrong??"
He said, "Isn't that your picture!?"
Oh no!!!! Even worse than a hazard! I was immediately assumed he meant a photograph of me, so I panicked. Impending doom.
"Oh no! What picture IS it? Why me? Why is MY picture on ANYthing?"
He answered, "It's there... It's your ARTwork."
Ohhhhhh yes. Yes it is. What. A. Relief. But it's *my* art on there, all alone- where are the others I assumed would be accompanying it? I mean, really? Just mine?
Here is a better and closer picture of it.

At that point though, I was really excited to see the billboard- but also assumed that other artists' work was being used on some advertising, too. After all, no one ever said anything about just using my image on things.

Later that week, we picked up the August MODE magazine. My husband was flipping through it on the couch. He mentioned there being an ad for Kipona in the magazine, and sure enough, there were my lilies again. I thought it was odd that both of the ads we'd seen so far were showing my flowers- I just figured other artists' work was being used on some of the advertising somewhere, too. Just hadn't seen it yet.

The following weekend, I got an envelope from Kipona in the mail, with a gigantic promotional postcard in it. (Artists participating in the festival can pre-order their postcards or wait until they see a sample, and then decide how many they want.) This particular sample had... again, my lilies on it.

I remarked, "Ohhhh, how nice of them to customize promotional postcards for each of the artists!!"
My husband gave me a funny look and replied, "I think EVERYONE has that postcard."
"Noooo... why would everyone have postcards with MY art on it? That doesn't make any sense."
"Sure it does. They used your art on the other stuff. They put it on the postcards for the show, too. It makes sense. The card you have is the same one as everyone else."
I just stared at it for a few minutes... then burst into laughter. Seriously?? All 149 (or however many) other artists have MY work on their postcards? Ridiculous. Hilarious. So they will be sending these out, and tons of people will see it? My painting? Really??? You've got to be kidding! I'm not even sure why I found (or still find) it funny... it was such a strange feeling.

The following weekend was the Mt. Gretna art show, and the postcards made their first public appearance. I guess the other artists who had pre-ordered had brought them and were handing them out. Most people were using the cards as fans since it was pretty hot, but it was still funny to me to see them everywhere.

When The Patriot called me yesterday to ask me a few questions about me, my art, Kipona, etc. (I can't believe I've been in their paper twice this year!) I did learn that Kipona does, in fact, pick one image and this artist is their "Featured Artist" for the show. Apparently... that's me. I am still shocked, and beyond flattered that, of all the images the judges must've seen, they liked mine enough to even consider it- let alone select it. I was already very excited about the show since it's in such close proximity to where I live, it's on the water, beautiful time of year- what could be better? Now I'm counting down the days until I can go set up my tent- I'm SO excited!

Even more about this show:
http://www.festivalsinpa.com/kipona-festival/

As if the show didn't have enough other cool things going on, there is also a Chili Cookoff and I believe I also read something about a Margarita Tasting! Guess unlike most other art shows, this one will have some refreshments to write home about.

Featured Artist: First Friday, August 7th, Gallerie 13

I can't believe I hadn't posted about this yet, but I didn't want to post about it TOO early... now time has flown by and I realized my big show is less than a week away.

At Gallerie 13 in Mechanicsburg, I'm one of two featured artists for the month of August. Brownyn Jean Hughes (whose work is absolutely fantastic) invited me to show with her this month and needless to say, I was flattered. It all happened pretty quickly, but I had just enough time to prepare, and enough work to fill up a wall.... so here I am!

I spent all last week framing and making prints. Sunday I spent the day hanging up my work at the gallery. I've still got 1 or 2 more things I might frame and put up, but not quite sure yet.

Anyway, here's a sneak preview:

There is more information here:
http://www.gallerie13.com/Events.html

and if you're in the Harrisburg/Mechanicsburg area on Friday, stop by in the evening to check out the show!

Some very nice people & some great reading!

Upon my return home late last night, I'm starting to regroup and try to settle back into a normal (though different) life again.
I checked my email this morning and was quite surprised, and flattered, by some folks who found my artwork and decided to feature me on their sites. What an honor and so kind of them.

The first is a blog, http://www.brneyedgal.blogspot.com/ and she sums it up by saying on her banner, "A little bit of this... a lot of that!"
She blogs about events going on in her life and is such a fun writer- she makes you really feel like you were there with her at an event she's written about. She also does some tributes, or the occasional review, sometimes with a give-away. I like blogs that have a good variety of content and aren't always about the same thing, which is why I like hers. You never know what you're going to get. One day a post might be about a birthday party, another post might be about a home makeover, the next day maybe it's about one of her many wonderful experiences being a Mom.
She wrote a lovely post about my artwork and I was so flattered to read it- even included some information about Hydrant Hysteria. It was like reading a whole biography of myself :)
http://brneyedgal.blogspot.com/2009/07/flowers-and-frogs-and-bugs-oh-my.html
and I enjoyed reading about how her son is a nature lover in the making... Yay!

The next was quite a surprise since I often hear about this website, http://www.foundhandmade.com
They're mentioned a lot on Etsy forums, so to get a convo on Etsy from them stating I'd been included in their recent posting about caterpillars (which are all ridiculously cute, but how can anything with caterpillars not be?) made me do a double-take to make sure they were contacting the right person.
I definitely smiled when I read the first sentence on this blog post which stated, "Caterpillars are lovely and fun on their own before they even become butterflies." My thoughts exactly!
If you enjoy cute caterpillars and want to see some adorable handmade ones, the post is here:
http://www.foundhandmade.com/news/comment_itemize?newsidx=242

The last is a wonderful blog, http://www.nottherockefellers.blogspot.com/ which has a lot of poetry, along with photos and stories too. Her writing style is really beautiful- both the poetry and her journal-style posts. She sent me an email via the contact section on my website to let me know that she had included my fireflies ACEO illustration to go along with her poem, "Catch and Release." You can click the title to read her poem- it's so beautiful and well written. Very significant. I was honored to have my artwork included with it in her post. I think a lot about when my sister and I used to go outside and catch lightning bugs. Now at 19, she's almost all grown up (and at 30 so am I, I guess...) and the poem made me think of how I miss those moments with her when she was a kid.

But she might not be above going out and catching some together if I mention it on my next visit home :)
